Counselling - My training and experience

I have used a counselling approach to the provision of training and the writing of resources in the field of personal development for all ages and stages of education, training and development in my work professionally over the last 25 years. At least 15 years ago I joined a counsellors' support group who organised a series of training events for members. The content of these courses covered the post graduate certificate in counselling offered by the local college of education. During this period I gained experience of counselling in areas such as stress, loss and separation, career and redundancy issues and relationship issues. I also had the opportunity to undertake training in supervision and group therapeutic processes. Later on I ran introductory and further counselling skills evening courses for teachers, working jointly with a colleague. Following time out to have a baby and bring her up, I have recently undertaken the ONC Level 3 Counselling Diploma to refresh my skills. I am a registered member of CCC and abide by its' code of ethics.

About "CCC" (Counselling Code of Conduct)

A Registered Charity - Caring for Emotional Health

Counselling is a rapidly expanding professional membership organisation for counsellors and psychotherapists in the British Isles. To date, they have established a network of 2700 affiliated CCC Registered Counsellors.

Since 1998 they have been building their membership whilst playing a key role in helping to link those on low incomes to their local counsellors who have opted to provide occasional cost-free, face-to-face counselling. Nationwide their independent affiliates consist of 750 volunteers.

Counselling Relationship

The 'good will' relationship between Counselling and its Members has enabled them to expand their membership and meet their charitable goals, year on year. All their Registered Counsellors have agreed to work to the same Code of Conduct and, in case of complaint, are subject to an Independent Complaints Procedure.

All their Counsellors and Psychotherapists reside within the British Isles, they have some recognised level of counselling qualification. If you're a counsellor and can comply with our conditions for registration and agree to abide by our Counselling Code of Conduct you may register free of charge.

The charity liaises between clients on low incomes and counsellors or psychotherapists who are prepared to provide free services. You do not have to offer free counselling to become a member.

CCC Code of Ethics

Counselling Standards

Our charity believes that the counselling relationship is not an equal relationship, and that the most important person in the relationship is the client and not the counsellor. The Code of Conduct below is based upon the premise that the counsellor will always act in the best interest of the client.

  1. Counsellors will always act in the best interest of their clients.
  2. The counselling relationship is for the benefit of the client, and the emotional well- being of the client will be the paramount concern of the counsellor.
  3. The number of counselling sessions will be kept to the minimum required to achieve those aims negotiated with the client during the contractual relationship.
  4. Each counsellor is obliged to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, and to inform the client about the purpose/s behind the processing of their Personal Data as well as explaining the safeguards in place to keep this data secure, private and confidential.
  5. Total confidentiality will be maintained, subject only to the following exceptions:
    1. Disclosures with the express permission of the client.
    2. Disclosures where the counsellor believes serious harm may befall a third party.
    3. Disclosures that would leave the counsellor liable to civil or criminal court procedure if not disclosed.
  6. Counsellors will be subject to the 'CCC' complaints procedure.

NB:

Some counsellors maintain confidentiality even if a client threatens self harm, but some counsellors do not. Counsellors should make clear to their clients exactly what level of confidentiality they intend to work towards - before the counselling relationship actually begins - and this will form part of the contractual, therapeutic relationship – whether this is via verbal or written agreement.

Para 5 allows counsellors to enter into a contract with their clients prior to commencement of counselling in which these and other exemptions to absolute confidentiality can be explicitly spelt out.
